The Michael Kraus Research Grant in American Colonial History
2009 Competition

The American Historical Association announces the availability of this grant to recognize the most deserving proposal relating to work in progress on a research project in American colonial history, with particular reference to the intercultural aspects of American and European relations. Only members of the Association are eligible. The grants are intended to further research in progress and may be used for travel to a library or archive, for microfilms, photographs, or photocopying--a list of purposes that is meant to be merely illustrative, not exhaustive (other expenses, such as child care, can be included). Preference will be given to those with specific research needs, such as the completion of a project or completion of a discrete segment thereof. Preference will be given to Ph.D. candidates and junior scholars. See past winners of this grant.

APPLICATION PROCESS

APPLICATIONS MUST INCLUDE:

  • application form with estimated budget; (login to AHA member section required) with estimated budget;

  • curriculum vita (3 - 5 pages maximum);

  • statement of no more than 750 words describing your project, including specific uses to which you will put the funds and indicating support for the project that you have already received. If special skills, such as foreign language, paleography, or oral history are essential to the project, please indicate your level of proficiency; and

  • a one-page bibliography of the most recent, relevant secondary works on the topic.

  • Specifically excluded from funding are help with typing, except for typing of camera-ready copy for an article, dissertation, or book, etc., which would qualify as a technical expense, and use of funds for partial salary replacement.

  • The DEADLINE is February 15, 2009. Mailed and faxed submissions are not accepted.

SELECTION PROCESS

The grants are awarded annually. Applicants will be notified by letter after the judges' committee meets to consider applications. Please, no phone calls.

PLEASE NOTE:
Within a five-year period, no individual is eligible to receive more than a combined total of $1,000 from the Beveridge, Kraus, and Littleton-Griswold grant programs.
